Dates : Jan 21,Jan 28, Feb 4, Feb 11

Time: 6:30-8:30 pm Time for set up if you come early from 6:15 onward.

This 4 week Class will cover the following:

Planning out your palette and the range of colours it offers.

Preparing your surface , and planning out/placing your drawing.

Blocking in your painting and background

Refining your details.

This is a beginner level class that is also suitable for intermediate painters that want to try a new subject or refine their animal paintings. So if you are enrolling you should have some experience with drawing (either free hand or with a grid)  to get your paintings outline down. A bit of painting experience is a bonus but not an absolute requirement.  I will offer two reference photos (probably a dog or cat) I will be working from that everyone can follow along with OR those with more experience are welcome to choose their own image provided they clear it with me first to make sure its a suitable reference.

You can choose to work in whichever of the two paints are familiar to you if you like I will be demonstrating in oils but have worked in acrylics as well.

Suitable for ages 16 to Adult as long as you have some drawing experience. If you’re not sure, send me an email and include a couple of drawings so I can let you know if its a good fit.

Required supplies to bring or purchase

Palette or palette paper

Acrylic or Oil Colours

-Yellow Ochre

-Ivory Black

-Titanium white

-Cadmium Red Medium

-Cobalt Blue (Ultramarine is fine if that’s what you have already or all you can find)

Optional extras

Alizarin Crimson

Cadmium Yellow Light

If you are using Acrylic bring a water jar for brushes and if you have worked with a medium you like or a retarder feel free otherwise water is all that’s needed

If you are choosing Oil Paints bring Linseed Oil and odourless Solvent in sealed containers. If you have never worked with oils and  are choosing to for this class please feel free to reach out about containers etc but small jam jars are perfectly acceptable for this class.

Brushes of your choice that include at least one #0 or #1 round brush for very fine lines(I really like a 0), a #3, a #6 anything in between those is handy if you have it but this wont be a large project. I prefer long handles. Flat, Bright , Angled or Filbert are all good for our purposes I like to have a couple extras when oil painting to save time of washing. Bright are shorter and I find them handy for being accurate and not getting too bogged down with paint. Ultimately if you don’t already have brushes don’t over buy, if you have brushes you love already bring them. I will link some brush types I have used and like.

If buying oils I recommend Gamblin but really recommend where you can spending the extra for the artist grade over the student grade, it works much more smoothly. If buying Acrylics I recommend the Liquitex or Golden Artist Grade . If you already have student grade paint and don’t want to buy more that’s fine we can make do but you may need either more layers or more linseed oil depending on the medium. Any questions at all email me and I will get back to you ASAP.

For surfaces to work on I recommend nothing larger than 8×10, 8×8 or 6×6 or 5×7 all fine sizes to work on for this class. Full canvas or canvas boards from any art supply or even the Dollar Store are fine. Wood panels are also fine but may require some at home preparation to prep for painting. You can even paint on mixed media paper taped to a board with painters tape if that is the route you want to go. have a couple extra in case you want to start over.
